Video has been a fantastic medium to sell your messages, and has been loving by people from different areas for different purposes. While People are paying much of their attention on how to shoot and cut great videos, camera tricks and editing techniques, another process that they need to paying equal attention is to write a good script before anything else can be done. A well-written, engaging script is the foundation or blueprint for a successful video, just as when we are starting building a website, we need to have a wireframe. Without the right foundation, the rest of the creating process will be in vain, and will not meet your purpose.

Why are Scripts important?

The way we write for papers in college will not work for video scripts. Research shows video viewership drops significantly after 60 seconds, this means we can very easily lose our viewers. We have to know who our scripts will appeal to, and why will they want to continue watching. Put yourself into the readers’ shoes is the key.

A script should be strong enough to translate your ideas and thought into words. Video is a visual medium, however, scripts should be able to enhance the video to be engaging. Now there are some good tips to help you to kick start your script-writing.

Keep It Short and Simple

It is critical to use short sentences and simple language when attempting to create concise scripts. Always try not to use industrial jargons and technical terms that potentially not understandable to viewers, and it is a great idea to have someone outside your area to review the scripts. Many video makers are trying to fill too much information, such as information on their products or services, viewers always prefer to find this information themselves on their pace in their free time. Remember, step into the point directly.

Engage your audience and manage expectations in the first minute

Just as I’ve mention earlier, you can lose your viewership very easily, the tip here is to start your video with an elevator pitch, and state what they are going to get from this video, because a great percentage of viewers will leave after a minute if they are still not know what they can get from the video and if this video can benefit them, they are very unlikely to take the risk of wasting their time to watch full.

Tell a Story and Be Personal

Many videos follow the routine of presenting a problem, introducing a solution, explaining why this solution work, and then asking viewers to take an action. This method might be OK for university tutorial videos, but definitely not ideal for the others. Never ever to present dry facts, data or statistics in this way as well. A good tip is to tell stories to your audience and do not afraid to be personal. People love to listen stories, walk through your audience with a scenario, engage them and present your solution or idea. Many businesses write video scripts that sounds too professional or ‘serious’, and lose opportunities to humanize their company, which is not matching their effort of marketing. Make friends with your audience, and you are more likely to deliver your message or sell yourself to them.

Set a Proper Tone

The tone you choose depends on your audience and the objectives of making the video. The choice to set a tone makes a video extremely powerful, as this gives you the chance to connect with your audience in a way that pure text cannot be. For example, many businesses write video scripts too professional or ‘serious’, and lose opportunities to humanize their company, which does not match their marketing efforts. A quick tip on humour, you can also use humour, but be wisely, and it is more effective to use humour as part of screen animation.

Pace yourself and Call to action

125 words to 150 words in a minute should be a good pace, please give your audience some time to allow them to absorb the information without too much effort. While at the end of the video, make sure to acknowledge your audience the next step they can take and encourage them to take the action.

Do a Table Read

Now you know how to write a great script and probably prepared one, it’s time to do a table read, doing a table read is essential before the scripts can go alive in front of a camera. When you are reading them out aloud, you are very likely to realize that some words and sentences look great on paper, but sound not OK when speaking. Then you can replace some of the words that sound award, robotic or unnatural, you may also alter the tone as well. By this time, probably you have got a perfect video script ready to go.
